Change Backgrounds with AI
What Is an AI Background Changer?
An AI background changer is a Fash Studio tool that replaces the background of a photo with a new scene. You upload one photo and describe the new background in a text prompt, add a reference image, or use both. The AI removes the original background and generates a new one that fits the subject naturally.
Fash Studio's background replacer keeps the subject the same, so the person or product you photographed appears in the new scene exactly as shot. When you want to change background for a campaign, a listing or a social post, one click on Run does it. Each run uses credits from your Fash Studio balance.
How to Change Background in a Photo with AI
Changing the background of a photo takes three steps: upload the photo, describe the new scene or add a reference image, then press Run.
- Upload your photo. Add the photo whose background you want to change. The person or product in it stays the same.
- Describe the scene or add a reference. Write a prompt describing the new background, upload a reference image of the background style you want, or do both.
- Run. Press Run. The AI removes the original background and generates a new one that fits the subject.
Three Ways to Describe Your New Background
You can describe the new background with a text prompt, a reference image, or both together. Used as an AI background generator, the tool builds the new scene from whichever of these you give it.
Prompt only
A prompt describes the new scene in words. Name the place, the surfaces, the light and the mood, such as "a sunlit outdoor café with marble tables". A prompt is the fastest way to try several scenes on the same photo. For more scene ideas and prompt examples, see the AI background studio guide.
Reference image only
A reference image shows the background style you want instead of describing it. To change the background of an image to match a look you already have, such as a past campaign or a mood board image, upload it as the reference and leave the prompt empty.
Prompt + reference
Combining both gives the AI a style to follow and words to steer it. Use the reference for the overall look and the prompt for details, such as the time of day or a specific surface in the scene.
Five example prompts for fashion and product shots:
- "A sunlit outdoor café with marble tables"
- "A seamless light gray studio backdrop with soft, even lighting"
- "A quiet city street at golden hour with blurred storefronts"
- "A white marble countertop with soft window light from the left"
- "A park path in autumn covered in orange leaves"
Photo Background Change Ideas for Brands
With an AI background changer, one product or model shot can work across studio, lifestyle, seasonal and marketplace images.
Studio and plain color backdrops
A plain backdrop keeps attention on the product. Describe a seamless studio wall in a neutral tone or a brand color, and every shot in a range can sit on the same clean background.
Lifestyle and street scenes
Lifestyle images show a product in use. An AI background of a café terrace, a city street or a sunny park puts the same model shot into a real-looking setting without a location shoot. If you only have a flat lay or mannequin shot, put the garment on a model first with the AI clothes changer.
Seasonal campaigns
Seasonal campaigns need fresh scenes several times a year. Describe autumn leaves, a winter street or a summer beach, and the same product photo carries each season's campaign. The finished image can then become a seasonal video with the AI product video generator, or you can plan the whole season with this guide to create a fashion campaign with AI.
Marketplace-ready product images
Marketplace listings often call for simple, consistent backgrounds. To change picture background for a whole product range, use the same prompt for every photo, so the listings share a similar look.
Tips for Natural Results
To change photo background naturally, match the light direction and perspective of the original photo, frame the subject for the new scene, and write specific prompts.
Matching light direction
The subject keeps the light it was photographed in. Describe a scene lit from the same side, for example "soft window light from the left" for a subject lit from the left, so the new background agrees with the subject.
Perspective
A subject shot at eye level looks natural in a scene seen at eye level. Mention the viewpoint in the prompt, such as "eye-level view of a city street", when the original photo was shot straight on.
Subject framing
Photos with some space around the subject leave room for the new scene to show. If the photo is cropped too tight for the layout you need, widen it first with the AI image extender.
Writing specific prompts
Specific prompts give the AI more to work with. "A white marble countertop with soft morning light and a blurred kitchen behind it" describes far more of the scene than "kitchen".
Background Changer vs Background Remover
Background Changer creates a new scene behind the subject, while Background Remover outputs a transparent PNG with no background at all.
| Tool | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Background Changer | The subject in a new, generated scene | Finished studio, lifestyle and seasonal images |
| Background Remover | A transparent PNG of the subject | Cutouts you place in your own designs |
For a cutout with no background, use the AI background remover. To create a completely new image rather than a new background, use the AI image generator for fashion.
Upload your photo above, describe the new scene and change the background in one click.
